When we realized that a great rock n’ roll story was practically right under our noses, we at TheFuze sprung into action. An email was sent, a phone call was made and a day later we found ourselves sitting opposite Kelly Garni, thumbing through his scrapbook as he recounted for us the early days of what would become one of the biggest hard rock bands of an era. Along with guitar sensation the late Randy Rhoads, bassist Kelly Garni founded Quiet Riot. The band rose through the ranks of the Los Angeles club scene in the mid-Seventies, securing for itself a regular gig at the Starwood. Having signed with a Japanese record label, Quiet Riot recorded two LP’s, 1978’s ‘Quiet Riot I’ and 1979’s ‘Quiet Riot II’. The band’s sound and image split the difference between poppy, commercial fare and guitar-oriented rock. And while the albums became quite popular in Japan, they never saw release in the States. Kelly Garni, tired of the grind, left the band in 1979. Within six months of leaving Quiet Riot, Kelly had cut his hair and begun a career as a paramedic.

Quiet Riot went through a series of changes. Guitarist Rhoads was drafted into Ozzy Osbourne’s band in 1980, where he proceeded to rewrite the book on heavy rock guitar. Two years later, Randy Rhoads was killed in a freak plane crash. In 1983, vocalist Kevin DuBrow resurrected Quiet Riot with an all-new lineup and released ‘Metal Health’. The album soared to the top of the Billboard Top 200 album chart. Kelly Garni, in the mean time, was harboring resentment as he again reconsidered the situation he was in.

For the past ten years now, Kelly Garni has been a successful professional photographer in Las Vegas. His Imagination Studio & Gallery has provided an outlet for a different kind of creative venture than music. Kelly has turned a one-time hobby into a career as one of the most sought-after photographers by models, entertainers and talent agencies. His gallery is a showcase for a variety of themed photo prints and artistic nudes. And it is in this gallery that we sat and spoke at length with Kelly Garni, discussing his history with Quiet Riot, his memories of Randy Rhoads and why everything about his life today seems quite right.
